The second book, The Seven Valleys or Book of the Journey (1992), was written between February and August of 1992, for Ben Hudson, who premiered the work in New York City on 29 March, 1993. The form of the piece recreates the structure of the text. The basic materials introduced in the first book are subjected here to an extension of the traditional concept of thematic transformation: they are reinterpreted according to the poetic significance of the text. In instrumental terms, this is a classic concertante form where the soloist has to overcome overwhelming odds to succeed.

There are seven sections, each representing a "valley" to be crossed. The first valley is the Valley of the Quest, the second the Valley of Love, the third is the Valley of Understanding,

Understanding, for each traveller, is enduring: even if a gnat were to fly with all its might could it equal the speed of the wind?

... the fourth is the Valley of Detachment,

Then comes a valley where there is neither desire to posses nor the wish to discover: nothing old or new has value; you can act or not act.

... the fifth of Unity,

In this valley everything is broken in pieces and then unified. Although you seem to see many beings, in reality there is only one, complete in its unity.

... the sixth is the Valley of Bewilderment,

There, sighs are like swords, and each breath a bitter sigh; there, is sorrow and lamentation, and a burning eagerness. It is at once day and night.

... and the seventh is the Valley of Death beyond which one can go no farther.

When the ocean of immensity begins to heave, the pattern on its surface loses its form.
